Scientific Award 2007

Scientists all over the world were asked to submit their papers for the first-ever PTV Vision Scientific Award by April 15, 2007. The jury accepted submissions that were presented last year at scientific conferences. They also welcomed Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral theses as well as co-authored papers.

The 4 Scientific Award winners

From a total of 24 entries, the jury of traffic and transportation professors from eight countries identified three particularly exceptional research projects that used VISUM or VISSIM.

The winners received their prizes at the 17th PTV Vision Users Group Meeting in Berlin:

1st prize winners: Wilco Burghout and Johan Wahlstedt

Wilco Burghout from the Catholic University in Stockholm and Johan Wahlstedt from the Ramboll Group brought home first prize. Their paper on "Hybrid Traffic Simulation with Adaptive Signal Control" won EUR 2,500 and a free pass to the Users Group Meeting in Berlin. The special attraction of their work is that it combines Prof. Burghout's mesoscopic simulation model with VISSIM so that a large urban area can be simulated mesoscopically, but complex intersections within this area can still be modelled microscopically. In addition to the technical feat of linking two simulation systems at runtime, the two researchers tackled the scientific challenge of correctly mapping the two models' various modelling levels to one another. The paper was presented at this year's TRB meeting in Washington.

Second place (EUR 1,000 and a free pass to the Users Group Meeting in Berlin) went to Keith Yu Kit Leung from Canada, who impressed the jury with his VISSIM project, "Development of a Microscopic Traffic Simulator for Inter-Vehicle Communication Application Research".

His microscopic traffic simulator holds particular appeal for ITS researchers since he works on car-to-car communication systems and how they can be applied to large traffic networks.

The winners received a EUR 2500 cash award
2nd prize winner: Keith Yu Kit Leung
3rd prize winner: Philipp Fröhlich

Philipp Fröhlich from Zurich won third prize (free pass to the Users Group Meeting) for his work, "Design and Application Fields for a Worldwide Air Transport Model". His work shows that VISUM can be used to model international air traffic.

The large number of high-quality submissions from all over the world shows that the scientific community has embraced the PTV Vision Scientific Award in its first year of existence. And so we will be issuing another call for papers for a Scientific Award in 2009. We look forward to getting your entries!
