PTV RoadRunner

PTV’s client software PTV RoadRunner provides powerful components for telematics applications. The SDK has been designed to be embedded on in-vehicle units. It runs on Windows, Windows CE and Linux; a release for QNX is available on request. PTV RoadRunner features a new and revolutionary data technology that enables incremental map updates.

Components

PTV RoadRunner includes the following components:

  • GeoAccess: manages and updates geodata and makes them available to other components
  • MapRenderer: visualizes geodata, displays digital maps
  • Locator: manages incoming positioning data (e.g. GPS) and detects the current position
  • MapMatcher: matches positioning data (e.g. GPS) to digital maps (road network or areas)
  • Router: calculates routes and generates maneuver lists
  • PromptGenerator: outputs the maneuver list in human readable text format

Incremental map update

PTV RoadRunner supports PTV’s revolutionary incremental map updating technology. It enables geodata stored in the onboard unit (OBU) to be updated via mobile communication, e.g. GPRS or UMTS. PTV software supports the entire data processing chain:

PTV provides tools which allow service providers to centrally edit map data, for example the road network (1). PTV’s Scalable Map Architecture divides maps into small tiles. Incremental up-dating means that only the edited tiles will be sent to the OBU. This reduced amount of data can easily be transmitted via mobile communication (2). The GeoAccess component of PTV RoadRunner integrates the new data into the existing database stored in the OBU (3).
