Organising commercial and private transport in European conurbations as well as medium-sized and large European cities still remains a major challenge. The aim of this research area is to improve traffic management (including intermodal transport) and to optimise and manage traffic flow.

Megacities
Urban sprawl and collapsing traffic are often associated with megacities such as Sao Paulo or Shanghai. Here we deal with the following issues: Is it at all possible to plan these quickly growing megacities? And if so, what governance structures and instruments do we need to provide strategic and sustainable urban development and transport planning? What can we achieve with local measures and what is the best public transport system for megacities?
