In the sense of sustainability

In the sense of sustainability

Sustainability means to meet the needs of the present without compromsing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. A sustainable development is based on three columns: it combines economic progress, social justice and environmental protection.

Our actions have been driven by sustainability at all times: since 1979, PTV has been working on cutting-edge solutions for transportation and logistics while always bearing in mind ecological, economic and social issues. In that way it is easier to take decisions for the future – be it for the development of transport master plans for cities and regions or for the optimisation of routes and locations in the field of logistics and sales.

Sustainability commitment at PTV

"For most of us mobility has become an important basic need. And these needs have to be met while keeping in mind ecological and economic sustainability."

Three questions for Thomas Haupt, Vice President and responsible for sustainability at PTV

PTV pursues ecological goals

What does ecological sustainability mean to you?

Thomas Haupt: We are currently living in a way which uses more resources than the Earth can afford to provide. Therefore, we must learn how to use these resources more effectively and to take care of our environment so that future generations can enjoy our planet just like we had the chance to and can shape their own life.

Let's take a closer look at CO2 emissions, for example: wherever people and goods have to be moved, traffic and carbon emissions are produced. PTV investigates how it would be possible to reduce traffic volumes or to make traffic more eco-friendly. For that purpose, we develop and provide innovative software solutions. In the business field Logistics Software, for instance, we offer map&guide, our route planning software that allows you to calculate emissions. Advanced traffic management helps us to avoid traffic jams and to improve traffic flow across an existing road network. Our transportation planning software PTV Vision is specifically designed to analyse the impact of settlement development and infrastructure measures on traffic and to improve public transport. PTV thus makes a significant contribution to ecological sustainability.

PTV pursues economic goals

Are ecological and economic objectives compatible?

Thomas Haupt: Ecological and economic objectives are of course compatible. Take Logistics Software, for example: With PTV software logistics operators can plan their trips and routes more efficiently and thereby avoid unnecessary trips. The transport sector can optimise driving times and routes and at the same time reduce both carbon emissions and costs. This leads to more reliable supply chains and higher service quality which are important factors that contribute to a logistics company's long-term success.

PTV pursues social goals

To what extent is mobility concerned with social sustainability?

Thomas Haupt: Today, mobility is an important basic need for many people. It is an expression of our quality of life. The idea of sustainability is to meet these requirements. Therefore, people around the world are working on the development of an ideal infrastructure. A majority of them have chosen our transportation planning software PTV for their applications. In this area we advise many clients and use our expertise to support them. Consequently, PTV is involved in numerous projects, such as CVIS or the follow-on project eCoMove that is funded by the European Union. Our aim is to ensure urban mobility. We also place a major emphasis on the demographic change in our society. In this context, we want to develop future transport master plans that allow as many people as possible to use current and new transport services.
