On the pulse of the Capital City

New Year's Reception at PTV's branch office in Berlin / Presentation of national and international projects

Berlin/Karlsruhe, 20th January 2010. PTV's branch office in Berlin steps into this new decade with numerous new projects and special foci. Therefore, PTV Berlin invited its customers and partners to attend its New Year's Reception at its premises located at Leipziger Platz. Dr. Uwe Reiter (Director International Consulting) from Berlin and Klaus Reinhardt from Dresden, head of PTV's consulting services for the federal states of Eastern Germany, welcomed all guests to this special event.

"PTV Berlin's profile is getting sharper. In addition to traffic planning, transportation modelling, public transport surveys and traffic management, we will now also focus on transportation research," says Dr. Uwe Reiter. "Moreover, we support and coordinate PTV's global business development. Together with PTV's branch office in Dresden we build the bridge to Eastern Europe and Russia. But of course, we are still active in the federal states of Eastern Germany."

PTV's branch office in Berlin was founded on 1st January 1992. While the company was first focussing on private and public transport planning projects for the Berlin and Brandenburg areas which were in a process of integration (e.g. closing the gaps within the suburban railway network and creating new Park+Ride concepts), it quickly expanded its business activities in terms of regions and service portfolio. Transportation models, travel demand calculations, traffic and transportation analyses and forecasts were developed for the federal states of Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Transportation experts from PTV Berlin were actively involved in public transport planning, developed local transportation plans and set out state-wide guidelines on the development of local transportation plans. The branch office in Berlin is now part of the Transport Consulting division in Dresden. This close cooperation ensures sufficient consulting capacity to address all transportation issues.

Focus on Berlin's public transport and traffic
Of course, PTV planners always also keep an eye on Berlin's traffic. A major focus in the field of traffic engineering was on planning traffic signal systems in Berlin and conducting feasibility and simulation studies as well as performance analysis. PTV planned numerous synchronised traffic lights (green phases) or public transport acceleration for a lot of BVG tram and bus lines  (BVG - Berlin's public transport operator).

PTV's traffic planners and modellers will continue to pioneer in traffic and public transport over the next decade: the development of a traffic model for the states of Berlin and Brandenburg as part of the overall traffic forecast 2025 is an important instrument for both states. It allows them to take decisions on future transport projects and policies and to plan and evaluate infrastructure development.

Berlin's traffic management centre (VMZ) is an integral element of the municipal traffic management system which helps to cope with daily traffic. VMZ is operated as a public-private partnership model. As the contract with the operator will soon expire, the state of Berlin has taken up the opportunity to define the requirements and conditions for the new traffic information centre. PTV has teamed up with Dr. Bahm Consulting and Schumann lawyers to assist the state of Berlin in specifying the requirements and to provide legal and technical advice throughout the contract award process.

Mobility management for regions
PTV Berlin is involved in several comprehensive research projects, such as the public transport and mobility concept for the Südharz-Kyffhäuser region. The aim is to develop economically viable mobility services that meet all regional requirements and are accessible to the public. They will include both standard and flexible transport services.

Forward-looking planning around the globe
PTV's branch office in Berlin is an important "turntable" for PTV's international projects. Besides coordinating all international consulting projects, PTV Berlin and Dresden build a particular bridge to Russia and Eastern Europe. Moreover, the staff from Berlin work in foreign countries, such as Jordan, the Arab Emirates and India, where they help to develop sustainable traffic concepts.
