Reviving the Silk Road
Visions of caravans filled with spices, perfumes and fine fabrics are
conjured up by any mention of the Silk Road, a term coined in 1877 by
Ferdinand von Richthofen, a German geographer. For centuries, this overland
corridor seemed to have been swallowed up by the desert sand.
Now, a vast EU project aims to revive the route, encourage trade between
East and West, and promote the development of regional infrastructure.
PTV's experts are helping by developing a freight transport model on a
truly grand scale.
PTV ITS Conference 2010 - Towards smarter mobility
Mark your calendar for PTV's 8th ITS Conference, which will take place on Monday, 11th October 2010 in Düsseldorf, Germany! This year's conference focuses on cooperative mobility and reviews smarter ways to plan and manage urban transport. It will bring together key players from various industry sectors (in particular mobile navigation experts and automotive OEMs), traffic management centres and public authorities.

Chinese transport association intensifies cooperation with PTV
Global demand for German expertise on transport concepts is ever increasing, in particular in the dynamic growth regions of Asia and the Middle East. In late July, a prestigious delegation from the Chancheng District in China visited PTV AG in Karlsruhe. Mr. Qiao, Deputy Mayor of the City of Foshan, signed a declaration of intent, affirming that both parties intend to intensify their cooperation in order to further improve traffic and transport in China.
Workload balancing for optimum routes and trips
Less tension and stress is what many suppliers are longing for, in particular in times of high capacity utilisation and low stress tolerance of drivers - and, of course, during a hot summer, when people buy a lot of ice-cream, beverages and grillables. The new version 6.0 of the trip optimisation software PTV Intertour is intended to remedy this situation. PTV is the first software provider to announce route schedules and trips that are both fair and balanced for the drivers.
Cooperative technologies for intelligent transport
The ideal basis for intelligent traffic management would be built on a network for information exchange between all parties involved in traffic and transportation. Intelligent means to use the road network in an efficient and optimal manner, to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of traffic jams and road accidents. The "Traffic Management" project that is part of the research initiative AKTIV shows how this vision can become reality.
PTV employee assumes leadership position at KIT
Coming full circle: Dr.-Ing. Peter Vortisch (45), head of transport planning software development at PTV, will assume the chair of the Institute for Traffic Engineering at KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as of July 1, 2010. Vortisch has been the third director of the KIT department since its foundation. His aim is to strengthen the cooperation of different disciplines, such as traffic engineering, transportation planning and computer science and to deal intensely with the new opportunities in the field of traffic telematics.
